The simulation "compute budget" is a function of size, persistence, and fidelity of a game, as well as the number of concurrent users, complex AI beings, and interactive objects.
The distributed compute infrastructure required to support metaverse-scale gaming has remained a really hard problem to solve. Games engines have a limit of <100 concurrent players in a single shard even for simple games. Spatial partitioning platforms have a fixed mathematical limit of 1-15k concurrent users and are costly and difficult to use.
Games developers have had to design around the limitations of available infrastructure. The more rich a metaverse world becomes, the fewer people can interact.
